ULTRA Acceptance

Sometimes, it’s easier to define something by what it is not. Acceptance is a powerful facilitator of emotional wellbeing, but hard to detect at first. This mnemonic can help.

The title of this post might have lead you to believe this is going to be tough: that sweat, tears and a great deal of physical exertion will be required. Don’t worry, our ULTRA is a far gentler affair. This memory aid is intended to help you feel some peace and relief around difficult issues in your life - from everyday frustrations to gut-wrenching heartbreak.

Acceptance isn’t ULTRA

Understanding we don’t have to understand something to accept it

Liking we don’t have to like it to accept it

Tolerance we can put up with stuff without really accepting it

Resignation we don’t have to resign ourselves to something to accept it

Approval we don’t have to approve of something to accept it

Acceptance is…

Not wanting something to be different from how it is.

Acceptance is hard because it is an absence: an absence of the desire for things to be different.

When we accept things they no longer trouble us.
